Updated Mercedes-Benz V-Class one after another follow the ring route: the town of Sitges, the meanders of the surrounding tracks, the track and back to the hotel. The dynamic presentation schedule in Spain is clear in German: 30 minutes are allotted for a round trip. You follow the ordnung – you have time to try out more versions. My flights are successful – I have already traveled to five different V-Class.
Before starting a curious aperitif – you can explore the V-Class of the near future. In the conference room of the hotel put up an electric concept EQV. Unique techno-design of the front part, an LED strip stretches between the headlights, the emblems and rims are decorated with blue. Under the floor, a battery with a capacity of 100 kWh, on the front axle an electric motor with a return of 201 liters. sec., declared speed up to 160 km / h, the promised range of over 400 km. Serial release is scheduled for 2021.
The current V-Class stands in rows throughout the parking lot. Wide range of! Three dimensions: the more popular vans with a base of 3200 mm and bodies with a length of 4895 mm or 5140 mm are brought to the fore, followed by a number of top versions of the XL size with a base extended by 230 mm and the body length is already 5370 millimeters. Salon configurations – from a six-seater with separate seats to an eight-seater with two sofas. Plus dozens of options, a choice of motors, drives and suspensions.
The main news in terms of technology is a series of two-liter diesel engines R4 OM 654 instead of R4 OM 651 with a volume of 2.1 liters. The new lightweight motors have an aluminum block head and a crankcase, coated cylinders to reduce friction, a variable geometry turbine, less noise and vibration, better economy (for the younger modification, consumption is already reduced by 13%), and as for the environment – V -Class in diesel fuel comply with Euro 6d-TEMP, which Europe will accept from September this year.
In total, there are two modifications in the diesel family with the familiar indices V 220 d and V 250 d (power has not changed – 163 and 190 hp), and at the top of the gamut appeared the debut V 300 d (239 hp). The automatic gearbox for these diesels is also new: the 7-speed has been replaced by a 9-speed – optional for 220 d and standard for others.
The drive is either rear or full 4matic, in which the default moment is shared with a slight emphasis of 45:55 on the rear axle. In addition to the base suspension, an adaptive suspension with amplitude-dependent shock absorbers and a slightly understated sports one are available. The previous generation V-Class had rear pneumatic elements, the current one has springs and nothing more.
Total in the parking lot is more than two dozen monocovers. Restyling is recognized primarily by other front bumpers, in which the air intakes are combined into a wide mouth. Changed the design of the rims (17, 18 or 19 inches). Slightly dressed up with chrome body. AMG versions have characteristic claddings with “diamond” dots.
The changes in the interior are modest: improved decoration and design of deflectors a la “turbine”. A significant novelty in the list of options: on the middle row, you can now order rich chairs with extendable support for the legs. I sat on such – comfortable ones, except that the packing would be a little softer.
When driving, you think about the target audience. A hired driver who has seen all sorts of minibuses will definitely consider the workplace prestigious and harmonious. Often V-Class is bought as a personal car. After the passenger experience, you have to come to terms with the vertical landing and with the jokes from the “pass for travel” series. On the go, bus associations quickly disappear: on the whole, the V-Class is user friendly. The review is good, the dimensions are immediately clear, the maneuverability is laudable. But literally, it’s not easy to handle: the mass nevertheless comes around with inertia in reactions. In general, the tested versions are comfortable and slightly relaxed, as if saturated with the secret composition of Mercedes.
The base van V 220 d 2WD of minimum length is the most pleasant for the driver. Presumably, a smaller mass also affects. With active driving, the younger diesel spins at high speeds more often than more powerful ones, but the return is problem-free. The steering wheel here is the most informative, in turns the short V-Class dives willingly, hints of skidding are even a pleasure. The suspension of the version is sports, the course is moderately tight and the banks are moderate.
The mid-size V 300 d 2WD with the AMG design package is equipped with an adaptive suspension and 19-inch wheels, it is more sensitive to minor flaws in the asphalt. But in general, rides smoother. The diesel pulls very measuredly, the automatic transmission strives to get to the upper gears as soon as possible, but the transition to active driving occurs organically. The top motor has an interesting overtorque mode – you press the gas pedal to the floor, and the maximum torque of 500 Nm increases for a short time by another 30 Newton meters. And according to the passport, the V 300 d 2WD version is the most frisky among the updated ones: acceleration to 100 km / h takes 7.8 seconds.
