Presentations of new cars: Alfa Romeo C39February 20, 2020
Like a year ago, Alfa Romeo gathered journalists before the start of the first day of winter tests to present a new car. During the recent break-in, the new C39 was painted in black and gray, but at the presentation it received the traditional white-red color scheme.
In the presence of the leadership of the team, Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi pulled the protective cover off the car, the ceremony was attended by reserve pilot Robert Kubica and development driver and team ambassador Tatyana Calderon. Kubica was the first to drive a new car in tests, having worked half the first day, and after lunch he was replaced by Giovinazzi.
Frederic Wasser: “Of course, we expected more from last season, there were both successes and failures. The team’s positions in the Cup of designers changed: we were either in fourth or ninth position. This was a good lesson for us. We missed the chance to earn points in several races: in Hockenheim, Baku, Monza and Spa. When you participate in the struggle for positions in the middle of the peloton, you need to use any chance, and we missed it several times.
In the first half of the season, we worked more stable, made not so many mistakes and withstood the competition from our rivals when they became stronger. And then it was the other way around. If we were not able to earn points, this does not mean that we did not modify the car enough. Rather, the fact is that we were not able to maximize our chances. The car had a good speed, but we, a team from the middle of the peloton, had to work perfectly in training and qualifications in order to fulfill the tasks we were facing.
In qualification, we occupied from 9th to 16th places. But you can earn points only if you work perfectly, and we rarely succeeded. I want to say that this should be a lesson for us. But our rivals faced the same problems, with the exception of McLaren, who was ahead of the rest of the team from the middle of the peloton.
At the heart of our new car is last year’s model, and this is natural, because the regulations have not changed. We must compete for positions at the beginning of the group of teams from the middle of the peloton. Our goal is to achieve results more consistently. Over the past year, we have noticeably added, so we are confident that we have a good foundation for effective work this season.
As for the contract with Alfa Romeo, when we started the partnership, it was clear to both parties that this is a long-term project. ”
The C39 was created under the leadership of Jean Monschau, technical director of Alfa Romeo Racing, and although outwardly it resembles last year’s model, Hinwil believes that the chassis concept is new, and thanks to this project the team will continue to move forward.
Jean Monschau, Technical Director: “C39 is the natural evolution of last year’s car, we were engaged in its further improvement, so almost all the parts are new, possibly with the exception of rims and tires.
This is a normal process of continuous improvement, but the machine is completely new. “We expect to improve performance compared to last season, take the next step forward, and I hope that we can claim leadership in the middle group of teams.”
