Preparation of the Volkswagen I.D. R sports prototype for the Pikes Peak raceMay 17, 2018
The company Volkswagen published a video, which showed how the preparation of the electric sports prototype I.D. R to the Pikes Peak race. In particular, how the engineers of Volkswagen Motorsport adjust the aerodynamic components to ensure the maximum downforce on the track.
The first stage of testing in the wind tunnel was the creation of a scale model of a racing car with a modular body structure. This allowed us to quickly change individual components and evaluate the effectiveness of their various combinations. In total for the sports prototype on a 3D printer, about 2000 parts were printed.
Electric Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak is built around a carbon fiber monocoque from the sports prototype Norma. Carbon also made a body and aerodynamic tail, designed to take into account the difference in heights during the race.
In the movement Volkswagen lead two electric motors with a total capacity of 680 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. From a place up to 100 kilometers per hour I.D. R accelerates in 2.25 seconds. The maximum speed is 240 kilometers per hour.
