Porsche showed the only bulletproof Porsche 911January 26, 2021
The legendary Porsche 911 sports car of the 996 generation received a set of armor plates from the factory.
In the mid-90s, the Porsche company released the only armored sports car in its history – it was the Porsche 911 Carrera 996. The car is currently in the brand’s museum in Germany. The sports car is equipped with specially designed glasses with a thickness of 20 mm, which positively affected the noise insulation of the model.
As for the body, Porsche engineers chose the Dyneema energy-absorbing composite for its construction, which has the same mass as steel, but at the same time 15 times stronger than it. Interestingly, thanks to this, you will not find any differences from the standard model on the outside. Unless the window frame will be slightly thicker than usual. According to the manufacturer, this armor can withstand hits from a 9mm pistol and a .44 Magnum pistol.
Unfortunately, the additional armor equipment did not pass without leaving a trace – the standard Porsche 911 Carrera 996 weighs 1,317 kilograms, and the armored car weighs 2,722 kilograms, which is twice as much. At the same time, the power unit of the sports car remained unchanged – a 3.4-liter boxer engine with 300 hp. The car became one of a kind due to the high cost and low demand.
