Auto giant Porsche is partnering with Customcells to manufacture batteries in Germany for high-performance electric vehicles.

Customcells is joining the German automaker to form a new company called the Cellforce Group to invest a “double-digit million dollar” in a joint venture in which Porsche will own 80% of the shares.

The new Porsche division will be tasked with producing new high-performance batteries. The chemical composition of the new battery cells will be based on silicon as the anode material. According to Porsche, this is a way to significantly increase the power density of the battery compared to today’s most energy hungry batteries.

The German automaker says the new battery chemistry will also lower the internal resistance of the battery. This will allow it to absorb more energy during recuperation and improve performance during fast charging. The new Cellforce battery cells can also withstand high temperatures much better than current batteries.

The new joint venture Porsche has also selected the world’s leading chemical company BASF as a partner in the development of the next generation of lithium-ion batteries.

BASF will supply high energy cathode materials for the new cells that provide fast charging and high energy density.

“This joint venture allows us to position ourselves at the forefront of global competition to develop the most powerful battery cell and make it the link between the unmistakable Porsche driving experience and sustainability,” said Porsche CEO Oliver Bloom.
