Porsche Cayman GT4 received too “long” transmissionMay 30, 2020
Transmission track version of the Cayman GT4 recognized as unsuccessful
The Porsche 718 Cayman coupe with the GT4 index is equipped with a manual gearbox, which is not very suitable for an extreme sports car: the gears in it are too “long”.
According to Frank-Steffen Wallizer, project manager of 718 and 911, in an interview with Which Car, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 received too long transmissions. The six-speed manual, which the model is equipped with, allows you to accelerate to the limiter already in third gear. “Do not get me wrong, but this gearbox of the old model and“ shorten ”its transmission is technically impossible, because there simply is not enough space on the shafts,” Wallizer assures. “We would really like them to be a little“ shorter ”, but we had no choice. The problem will be solved a bit later this year, ”he promised.
Obviously, the Porsche 718 and 911 project manager was referring to the new seven-speed PDK dual-clutch robotic gearbox. An additional gear in the box will reduce gear ratios, which will provide the Cayman GT4 with even faster acceleration – presumably by 0.2-0.3 seconds in the current 4.4 seconds. Since the start of sales, rear-wheel drive sports cars of the 718 line with an atmospheric four-liter 420-horsepower “opposition” have been equipped only with a six-speed manual gearbox, but from the end of 2020 they can be purchased with a seven-speed robotized transmission.
