The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 was introduced last year as the highest performance version that is already capable of impressive things. However, according to Which Car, the GT4 has a serious problem, at least on the roads of Australia. There is a long gear for a six-speed manual, which means that the driver is handling the speed limit by the time the red line arrives in third gear.
In an interview with Frank-Steffen, Wallizer, manager of product lines 911 and 718, explained the nuances.
“The gearbox that we have, do not get me wrong, it is old, already existing, and gear shifting was technically impossible, because we did not have enough space on the shafts if we needed adjustment there,” he said.
However, there is a solution to this problem along the way, since at the end of 2020, Porsche intends to introduce a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. An additional transmission gear will reduce gear ratios for the rest of the gears, which will improve acceleration.
“We would really like this [transmission] to be a little shorter, but technically there was no way out. We have an answer that will come later this year, and that’s very good, ” – said Wallizer.
Spy shots also suggest that Porsche wants to develop a variant of the GT4 RS. The company may also try to extract more power from the 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine. There is currently no indication that the 718 Boxster Spyder will also receive these updates.
