In the first week of the pre-season tests, the teams worked on the distance covered and did not try to maximize the potential of the updated Pirelli tires. According to Mario Isola, the assessment of the speed capabilities of the trains will be one of the priorities of the second week of tests.
Mario Isola, head of the Pirelli autosport division: “It’s too early to draw conclusions, but at the moment the tires’ behavior is in many ways consistent with expectations – the difference between the trains is about six to seven tenths per lap. More precisely, six-tenths of each other separate formulations C2 and C3, about the same difference between C3 and C4 — the listed formulas were used most frequently in the course of these tests. Due to cool weather conditions, as expected, granulation of rubber was observed, but this problem will disappear by itself when, during the course of the season, participants perform at a higher temperature.
To make comparisons with the winter tests of previous years, it is necessary to make an amendment to the many changed factors. In 2019, the new technical regulation came into force, the mass of cars increased, their aerodynamics changed. We also noticed that asphalt has become more abrasive compared to last year and provides better mechanical grip.
The teams demonstrated impressive reliability and speed of new cars, which was largely due to favorable weather conditions. As usual, during the first phase of the tests, everyone worked mainly on reliability and checking their calculations, next week the teams will focus on pure speed and try to maximize all the features of our updated tire line. ”
