Pirelli is preparing 18-inch tires for the F-1January 12, 2019
Despite the fact that the technical regulations in Formula 1 for 2021 have not yet been approved, the company has already begun work on new tires. The head of the auto racing division Mario Isola says that they are afraid not to be on time.
“We can no longer wait,” says Isola. – All terms with the definition of the parameters passed. We need at least 80-90% of information about new tire characteristics in order to adapt them to the new rules. It is very difficult to do work without this information, so the sooner we get it, the better.
Before the transition to 18-inch tires there are only two years left, we must use this time to the maximum efficiently. I am sure that if we do everything right, we will have a great and interesting product. ”
Isola notes that they also do not forget about actual tires, which they plan to improve this year. He also expressed his negative opinion about the two mandatory pit stops. “I’m not sure this is a good idea. There is a possibility that participants will stop on the first lap. ”
“We are more conservative in this regard. Anyway, everyone will try to drive the race with one pit stop, so it would be better to give the riders good stable tires for a more active attack. Probably in this case the competition would be more interesting. ”
