Pierre Goesley: I have the best job in the world.April 13, 2019
The incident in the qualifying finals in Shanghai spoiled the session for both Red Bull Racing drivers who were looking to compete for a place in the top three, but in the race the team hopes to win back …
Max Verstappen (5th): “On the last attempt in the final qualification, everyone drove one after another, and I was in favor of Ferrari. In fact, I tried to be kind and not to overtake, because you should not do that when everyone is preparing for the final round. But I did not expect that at the end of the circle they would overtake me. Of course, I am dissatisfied with the incident and my fifth position, but I just did not have the opportunity to drive the final round.
I am sure it will come back to them – next time something like this will happen to someone else, but I’m upset, because I fought for third place. When you can not pass the last lap in the finals, you understand that those who managed to start it, you can get ahead – it happened. Everything is as it is. This will make the race more interesting. We have a good racing pace. I do not know if this is enough to win, but we will fight for the podium. “
Pierre Gusli (6th): “To pilot Formula 1 cars – I have the best job in the world, so I have nothing to complain about! (laughs) Today everything went well, but it’s still difficult to drive a car and I’m not completely satisfied with my work. But sixth place is perhaps the best we could expect.
I have to add in several areas, but now more pleased with the machine than last weekend. Now we understand what we have to work with. Tomorrow I will have a different strategy than those who start ahead – today I used Soft tires, so let’s see how it works.
Of course, we know that problems are possible with the degradation of Soft tires, but anything can happen on this route. We saw it last year, when Daniel Riccardo won, and again in today’s qualification, when there was a commotion during the final attempt.
Max was quick all weekend, now we both have to focus on the race. We will give everything and hopefully earn a lot of points. We have a good starting position, I look forward to the race with enthusiasm. ”
Christian Horner, team leader: “On the one hand, the unsuccessful qualifications for the team, on the other – positive. It is good that both drivers are in the third row of the starting field, and I am especially happy for Pierre, who repeated his best result in qualifying, but it is a pity that we could not fight for third place.
Once in the final qualification, Max and Pierre showed the fourth and sixth time in the first attempt. Before the final attempt Verstappen managed to take a good position between the two Ferrari, but when many slowed down before the last pin, it was overtaken by Sebastian. Then Max tried to slow down himself to let go of Vettel, and both Renault riders overtook him. By this time, he had lost so much time that he did not have time for the final round. Unfortunately, the whole situation prevented Pierre, and as a result, both cars did not have time for the final attempt. But we have much less conceded to the leaders than in Bahrain, and we have a good starting position. ”
