Photos of the new BMW 3 Series in camouflageJune 13, 2018
Car photographer Daniel Hook took off the new BMW sedan of the third series during tests at the Nurburgring. The Dutchman photographed the car on a sunny day from a close distance – right next to the boxes where the engineers of the brand work.
Judging by the large diameter wheels and the large air intake in the center of the bumper, the captured car is a powerful six-cylinder version, or at least a car with a M-package. Despite the camouflage film, the photographs clearly show large “nostrils” in the spirit of the upcoming eighth series, and the modified design of the front optics.
The headlights themselves are visually combined with the radiator grille, as in the current BMW fifth series. And the two headlights sections are visually separated by “fangs” growing from the bumper (something similar can be seen on the Peugeot 3008). Running lights – in the form of small glowing brackets under each headlight section.
By analogy with other new BMWs, 3 Series will receive powerful versions of M Performance, which will stand on the step below the flagship supersedan M3. According to Autocar magazine, it is these cars with six-cylinder engines that will appear first: the 360-horsepower petrol M340i M Performance and the all-wheel drive M340d xDrive M Performance with 320-horsepower diesel. Apparently, such a machine and caught the Dutch photographer.
At the same time, BMW does not intend to reduce the line of diesel engines: 3 Series with the G20 index will receive diesel engines with three, four and six cylinders. There are interesting changes in the strategy: it will be possible to order a full drive even on entry-level machines. The xDrive transmission will be available on three- and four-cylinder models 316i, 318i, 320i and 330i.
The new model will be built on the modular architecture of CLAR, which underlies the machines of the seventh and fifth series. According to Autocar, a set of measures to save weight allowed to reduce the weight of the car by about 50 kilograms. In addition, the BMW 3 Series promises to be the most aerodynamically perfect car in the class: the English magazine mentions the coefficient of aerodynamic resistance 0.22.
Most likely, the BMW of the third generation of the new generation will be presented next year, 2019.
