Photos of a prototype of a completely new Opel Astra appeared on the webApril 7, 2021
The journalists have published photos of a heavily disguised prototype of the brand new Opel Astra. The model is expected to debut later this year.
The redesigned Opel Astra, which will look a lot like the third-generation French Peugeot 308 hatchback, will be unveiled later this year. Completely disguised prototypes of the novelty were noticed several times by Western publications. Now, we publish a fresh batch of photos of the German novelty.
While these shots do not provide a sufficient understanding of what the exterior of the new car will be, it can be concluded that the new Astra will be more than just a renamed Peugeot 308.
Based on the same EMP2 platform as the Peugeot 308, we expect an almost identical mix of petrol and diesel engines for the new Astra, as well as several plug-in hybrid engines. In the initial PHEV version, the new Peugeot offers a total output of 180 hp, while the more powerful variant boasts 225 hp. Both feature a front-wheel drive configuration, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 12.4 kWh battery providing 60 km of range measured according to the WLTP cycle.
Peugeot recently confirmed that the all-electric 308 is slated for release in 2023 and will be a serious competitor to Germany’s VW ID.3. Meanwhile, there are rumors that the “hot” Astra OPC will receive a high-performance hybrid with 300 horsepower (450 Nm) and all-wheel drive.
Logic tells us that Opel will present the new Astra at its home in Germany in September at the IAA, but not in Frankfurt as the event has been moved to Munich. The online premiere may take place several days or weeks earlier.
