Peugeot will not return GTi for the upcoming 208 hot hatchbackOctober 5, 2019
The hot Peugeot 208 approaching us will receive the name Peugeot Sport Engineered, and not the legendary GTi badge.
The productive version of the recently released 208 Supermini seems set to lower gasoline power levels and shift to electric traction. However, the French company is currently considering abandoning the GTi badge in favor of the nickname Peugeot Sport Engineered, despite the legacy associated with the productive sub-brand.
French bosses Peugeot decided to abandon the idea to name the next 208 GTi due to its all-electric transmission. Executives told Auto Express that Peugeot Sport Engineered is currently the favorite name for the company’s renamed division; For the first time, the name was given with a hint of the concept car 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered from the Geneva Motor Show this year. Bosses say this shows the company’s future direction for new performance models.
The bosses of Peugeot UK, however, are trying to defend the name of the GTi, such is its legacy. Bosses cite the recently released all-electric Porsche Taycan Turbo as an example of brand strength.
Peugeot insider told Auto Express that the GTi name has “great resonance and heritage in the UK, and the GTi name will be perfect” for the hot 208.
