Peugeot plans to substitute a more budget version of the Peugeot e-208May 1, 2020
The French brand is considering expanding the e-208 range by adding a model with a smaller battery and lower price tag.
The Peugeot e-208 may soon have an option with a lower range and lower price, which could lead to a reduction in the base price of an electric supermini to £ 22,000. The French brand actively takes into account consumer demand and can introduce an update for the e-208 in the middle of the cycle in time.
Peugeot Brand Manager for Electric Cars, Ann-Liz Richards, noted that the higher the customer’s location for electric vehicles is, “the less we need to reassure them.”
“Currently, customers do not say that the e-208 is too expensive, but at some point, we may need a more affordable option, and we can always get a smaller battery. The only thing that brings diversity is that we need to be sure that customers need it, ”Richards said.
From a technical point of view, it is relatively easy to offer a number of varieties of batteries for an electric vehicle. In the case of Peugeot, it would be simple to remove cells from the existing e-208 unit with a capacity of 50 kW / h until the desired result is achieved.
Adding a choice of battery capacity can complicate the production process of an electric vehicle, as well as increase its production costs – both will frustrate the e-208 expansion project if the business case is not profitable.
At the moment, the Peugeot e-208 is only available with a battery of 50 kW / h, which provides a declared maximum range of 339 km. It is likely that a Peugeot model with a smaller range will lose about 25 percent of the battery capacity, reducing the system power to 37 kW and offering a new maximum range of about 241 km.
