Petter Solberg: I Will Never Forget Rally WalesOctober 13, 2019
World rally champion and two-time world rally champion Petter Solberg played the final chord of his professional career in Rally Wales in early October, defeating WRC2 in the Volkswagen Polo GTI R5. In a special column on the official website of the WRC, a Norwegian veteran shared his thoughts and impressions of the British stage, where he spoke with his son Oliver.
“I really looked forward to speaking at this rally, it was always special for me,” says Solberg. – However, until the very start, there was no sense in thinking about him, because Oliver and I performed in America and here in Europe on the farewell tour, and besides, he just recently got the rights. I was very worried when he did not pass the written exam the first time, but in the end everything worked out.
At the start of the rally, I again thought more about Oliver’s race than about mine. On the first stage on Friday, he stopped on the side of the road in front of me with a damaged wheel, and I even slowed down, but Phil [Solberg navigator Phil Mills] told me to continue.
On the first day, I clearly heard the transcript, but still I could not attack like I had just a few years ago. On Saturday, coverage became more predictable, and we added a bit. On Sunday, I was already confident in myself.
After the finish line at the last stage I experienced incredible sensations. Seeing fans in yellow and blue in honor of Subaru was amazing. “I wanted to finish my performances at the WRC in a rally that I will never forget, and everything went just perfect.”
