Panasonic is going to release new Tesla batteriesOctober 30, 2020
The company started working on the production line for 4680 elements immediately after their presentation.
In September, Tesla unveiled the first-ever in-house developed 4680 batteries. Test production will begin at a factory in Fremont, California.
Tesla previously manufactured its electric vehicle batteries from third-party batteries. In particular, the largest supplier in the United States was the Japanese concern Panasonic, which makes 2170 batteries for the Model 3 and Model X.
Now Panasonic has already announced its desire to also participate in the production of new 4680 batteries. Presenting the financial statements for the third quarter of this year to investors, the Japanese company management said that work on the creation of a pilot production of new batteries began immediately after Elon Musk spoke at the “Day batteries, ”reports Reuters.
Musk originally planned to make the new batteries entirely on his own. At the same time, he admitted that it is still far from the launch of full-scale production, since Tesla has not yet figured out a way to produce such batteries in really large volumes.
Panasonic hopes its technology will allow for the production of the 4680. If successful, Tesla could license the Japanese to produce their batteries, effectively outsourcing their assembly.
Earlier, other Tesla suppliers, in particular LG Chem, expressed a desire to make new batteries.
