The next generation Jeep Grand Cherokee will be built on the platform used on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio crossover and the Alfa Romeo Giulia sedan. This is the head of the Fiat Chrysler Automotive concern Sergio Marchionne told in an interview to the journalists of the publication Motor Authority. The interview took place last Friday, after the conference of investors FCA, held in Italy.

Since 2011, the Grand Cherokee of the fourth generation with the factory designation WK2 has come off the assembly line in Detroit. They share their platform with Mercedes M-Class (also GLE) – its Grand Cherokee inherited from the time when Jeep was part of the DaimlerChrysler concern.

Initially, the platform for the new Jeep was created on the basis of the Alfa architecture, which was modified to make it possible to create a Grand Cherokee with two rows of seats, and with three, “Marchionne said in an interview with Motor Authority.

The exact date for the appearance of the new Grand Cherokee has not yet been named, but Marchionne confirmed that all work on the platform has already been completed. This may mean that the new model is already in a rather high degree of readiness. It is assumed that we can talk about the appearance of the new Grand Cherokee in 2020 or even 2019.

In addition, in his interview Marchionne made a reservation that the unnamed “three-row SUV segment E”, announced in the company’s product plan, will also be called the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

On models of the Grand Cherokee lineup, the first autopilot will appear. First, it will be the second-level electronics of autonomy, but by 2021 a more advanced level 3 autopilot should be introduced, allowing on the highway not to follow the road.

In terms of development until 2022, there are other curious details – an ultra-compact crossover class A / B, a Jeep pickup, flagship Wagoneer / Grand Wagoneer models and four electric cars.
