New Volkswagen New Urban Coupe debuts in spring 2020September 3, 2019
The serial version of the model will be available in 2021.
After the teaser on August 30, Volkswagen confirms that what it currently calls the New Urban Coupe will be presented to the public in spring 2020. This is the first global model of the brand, the design of which and the entire development was carried out in the Brazilian division of Volkswagen.
“For the first time in our history, we will be offering our own car concept on the international market and will share the design, technology and know-how from Brazil with the whole world,” said Pablo Dee C, President and CEO of Volkswagen Latin America.
So far, the German automaker is showing only rough outline of the New Urban Coupe profile. Judging by these images, the car is a compact five-door crossover with a coupe-shaped body. By modern style standards in this class, the front overhang looks rather long. There is also a steeply falling roof that creates a sleek design.
New Urban Coupe is built on the VW MQB platform. According to Motor1.com, the production model may be called the T-Sport when it hits the market in May 2020.
At least in the Brazilian market, the New Urban Coupe will be available with a naturally aspirated 1.6-liter engine with 108 horsepower and a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. Customers can also choose a 1.0 TSI engine with 114 hp. with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Volkswagen will start mass production of the New Urban Coupe at Anchieta in Brazil starting in 2020. The automaker will also produce them in Europe for sales in this region, but starting in 2021.
