New sports car Nissan Z Proto presentedSeptember 16, 2020
The Japanese automaker has unveiled a prototype for its legendary Nissan Z sports car series, dubbed the Nissan Z Proto, featuring retro styling, a powerful twin-turbo engine and a host of technologies.
Nissan has finally unveiled a full-fledged successor to its iconic 370Z sports car – the new product has received the designation Nissan Z Proto. However, it is still a prototype, as the word “Proto” speaks about, which is translated as “prototype”. Representatives of the brand say that the car gives an idea of what to expect from the production version of the model.
Much of what this concept has – retro styling, a redesigned interior and a twin-turbo V6 – should be in the production version of the Nissan Z. We expect Nissan’s new sports car to officially go on sale next year.
At the heart of the Nissan Z Proto is a twin-turbocharged V6 engine. However, since this is still a concept, things like actual horsepower and dynamic capability data remain a mystery.
Rumor has it that this engine has over 400 horsepower. This figure will be a significant upgrade from the current 370Z, which produces 332bhp. Moreover, it would give the Nissan Z an opportunity to compete with the 382bhp Toyota Supra and the more powerful Ford Mustang GT and Chevrolet Camaro SS.
The new twin-turbo V6 Z Proto is mated to a six-speed manual transmission, and all that yet-unknown power is sent exclusively to the rear wheels. Nissan says an automatic transmission will also be offered.
The exterior of the Nissan Z Proto pays homage to its legendary predecessors. The bright pearlescent yellow paint is a subtle nod to the first generation 240, while the elongated bonnet, rounded LED headlights and square grille combine with elements from other Z cars. The boot even has a Fairlady Z badge.
The Nissan Z Proto offers a clean multi-screen layout. At the heart of the interior is the so-called “deep saucer” three-spoke steering wheel with the “Z” logo and multiple controls on both sides. Behind the wheel is a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that replaces the outdated 370Z analog gauges. There’s also a brand new touchscreen display with Nissan’s latest infotainment system and three rounded indicators just above that center screen, above the dash.
The Nissan Z Proto is just a concept, but we expect a production version to arrive later next year as a 2022 coupe. More details, such as horsepower and starting price of the car, will be revealed closer to its launch date, but it could start at $ 40,000, slightly below its Japanese rival Toyota Supra.
Not so long ago, we wrote that the new Nissan Syphly sedan has become an absolute bestseller in China. The car received the greatest popularity after the appearance of a new generation in 2019.
