Ram HD (Heavy Duty) of the new generation is perhaps the most important premiere of the Detroit autoshow 2019, because the FCA pickup family has been ranked third in the list of absolute bestsellers of the American car market for many years in a row after the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado: last year 536,980 were sold , 909,330 and 585,582 copies, respectively. Taking into account the fact that in 2018 Silverado sales decreased by 0.05%, while Ram increased by 7.24%, there are good chances that this year the FCA pickup truck will overtake the sales of a competitor from GM, which By the way, also recently experienced a generational change. The all-new Ram 1500 was introduced exactly a year ago, and now the heavier versions with the 2500 and 3500 indices have arrived, that is, real work horses with a carrying capacity of up to 3.5 tons, which can also tow a 15.9-ton trailer (for that requires a special mount in the body).
For the car, there are three engines to choose from: the base gasoline 6.4-liter V8 HEMI (415 hp, 581 Nm) and the new 6.7-liter Cummins turbo diesel with two degrees of boost: the younger version gives 375 hp and 1152 Nm, the older – 405 hp and 1356 Nm. In terms of torque, the top-end Cummins outperforms Ford’s V8 Power Stroke diesel (1268 Nm), which is put on the F-Series pickups, and the GM’s Duramax V8 (1234 Nm), which is equipped with the Chevrolet Silverado HD, so the HD HD is now considered the most high-torque model in its class. The 6-speed hydromechanical automatic gearbox of the Japanese company Aisin is put in a pair to the powerful diesel engine, and the gasoline unit comes complete with the native 8-speed TorqueFlite gearbox. It is curious that in the petrol versions the automatic selector is designed as a washer and is located to the right below the steering wheel, while the diesel versions flaunt a traditional poker.
The cabin can be single, double and double elongated, with an increased margin of legroom. The list of options includes locking differentials of both bridges, a winch and a hinged camera, which can be installed in any place to, for example, control the dimensions of a trailer. The rear axle is equipped with tire bellows supporting constant ground clearance. Since there is no default trunk, the developers have provided all sorts of niches, pockets and shelves in the cab with a total capacity of as much as 258 liters. The top-end multimedia system Uconnect 4C NAV comes complete with a luxurious vertically oriented 12-inch touch screen, on which you can display two working applications at once from your smartphone. The 750-watt Harman Kardon audio system provides as many as 17 loudspeakers in the cockpit, but of course also among the many options.
Ram HD pickups will be produced at a plant in the Mexican city of Saltillo – much to the displeasure of President Donald Trump, who advocates local assembly and jobs for Americans, not for Mexicans.
