New KIA models will receive an innovative transmissionJune 24, 2020
Michael Winkler, Head of KIA Engine Development, spoke about the new iMT manual gearbox.
Intelligent manual gearbox debuts in Europe on the Ceed family of models with the new 1.6 CRDI mild hybrid engine. Later this year, iMT will also receive an updated version of the Rio with a 1.0 T-GDI gasoline engine with soft hybrid technology. In the future, KIA will equip other models with an innovative transmission. In addition, this system will be used on Hyundai vehicles.
The iMT transmission features intelligent electro-hydraulic clutch and offers the benefits of an automatic transmission. According to Michael Winkler, in Europe, car enthusiasts often want to shift gears themselves: more than half of the buyers order cars with a manual gearbox. IMT is an excellent solution because it provides intelligent grip on wires: when “the pedal is relatively ordinary and its operation is electro-hydraulic.”
The system automatically turns off when you release the gas pedal and turns on as soon as the car accelerates again, resuming its work with the engine and gearbox at any speed. Fuel consumption and emissions are reduced depending on driving style and location. At a constant speed, this does not matter much, but in the city it saves 3% of fuel. At the same time, due to its simplicity, the unit costs quite a bit, however, it allows you to save manual gear shifting in combination with less consumption and, above all, additional driving comfort and convenience.
