Revealed information about the Kia K5 sedan for global markets

Kia has completely unveiled the K5 sedan (aka Optima) for global markets. The model switched to the power units of the Smartstream family and for the first time in its history received four-wheel drive.

The new Kia K5 is chosen as a platform to demonstrate the evolutionary development of the corporate design language. Three centers of the brand’s style from Europe, the USA and Korea worked immediately on the appearance of fastback. He acquired LED headlights integrated into the radiator grille, running lights, a shape reminiscent of “heart pulsations,” a generally more aggressive front end and muscular proportions inspired by the Stinger.

Dimensions have also changed. Compared with its predecessor, the new K5 has become 50 millimeters longer, 25 millimeters wider and 20 millimeters lower. Wheelbase increased by 45 millimeters. For conventional modifications, wheels ranging in size from 16 to 18 inches are offered, the K5 GT variant got unique 19-inch wheels, other bumpers and a bifurcated exhaust.

The fastback interior is decorated with a 12.3-inch digital dashboard and an eight or 10.25-inch central display of the media system. The equipment list also has a BOSE audio system with 12 speakers and a Sound of Nature relaxation mode, Mood Lighting background lighting, steering wheel and seat heating. Depending on the market, K5 armchairs use fabric, artificial and genuine leather. For the decor, panels made of metal or with a wood-like texture have been selected.

In the USA and Korea, a 1.6 T-GDi turbo engine (180 forces and 265 Nm of torque) will be available for the Kia K5 with technologies for continuously changing the duration of CVVD valve opening. Also in some markets, the sedan will have 2.0 MPI units (152 hp and 192 Nm of torque), 2.0 CVVL (160 hp and 196 Nm) and 2.5 GDi (194 forces and 246 Nm). Version K5 GT will get 2.5 T-GDi power of 290 hp and 455 Nm of torque, accelerating the car to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds. Later, hybrid options will be added to the lineup.

All engines, except 2.5 T-GDi, are paired with a six- or eight-band automatic transmission. The eight-speed robotized gearbox with two wet clutches is offered to the top turbo engine in pair. In addition, the equipment list has a Drive Mode Select selector with four profiles and one individual. Finally, for the first time, the Kia K5 is available with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

The ADAS electronic assistants kit includes blind spot monitoring, front and rear spaces, adaptive cruise, all-round visibility, lane holding and freeways. The Remote Smart Parking Assist function allows you to park the sedan remotely using a key fob. “At the base” the K5 has nine airbags and an advanced electronic stabilization system.

In global markets, the new Kia K5 will appear in the first half of 2020.
