The South Korean automaker announced that production of the 2022 Tucson has begun at Hyundai’s Montgomery, Alabama plant.

This marks the first time a Tucson has been manufactured in the United States, and this is the first time the plant is producing four cars at once, including the Sonata, Elantra and Santa Fe. Hyundai expanded the plant to house the Tucson assembly line, but it did so because the manufacturer is confident that the new crossover will be a huge success, like its predecessors. The all-new Hyundai Tucson is sure to grab attention. Its bold and aggressive design makes many competing compact crossovers look “soft”.

“The addition of this fourth Hyundai vehicle to the HMMA product line will help the Hyundai brand meet the growing demand for SUVs in the North American market. It will also improve HMMA’s position to fully utilize its assembly capacity, ”said Jose Muñoz, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America.

The Tucson, once known in some markets as the ix35, was Hyundai’s top-selling global model and it was decided that pushing the boundaries of design would be essential as new players emerge in the segment. Hyundai calls this style sensual sportiness. The radiator grille features “kinetic gemstone surface details” like the Elantra and Sonata sedans. What’s especially cool is that the LED daytime running lights are only visible when turned on.

Power is provided by an American 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 190 horsepower and 247 Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid model is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four with an electric motor, producing a combined 230 hp. and 350 Nm. The plug-in hybrid version with the same 1.6-liter engine has 265 hp. and 350 Nm and AWD as standard. Tucson PHEV can travel about 50 km on electric traction.

The next generation Hyundai Tucson will once again compete with powerful models such as the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape. The 2022 Tucson is expected to go on sale in dealerships this spring.
