The Genesis G80 EV is seen at a recharging station.

After we confirmed that the first Genesis electric car will be based on the third generation G80 (codenamed RG3). Today we have a new spy photo that confirms that the Genesis G80 EV continues to be tested, in the photo it is connected to a charging station. While the regular G80 will appear in 2020, the EV version will be released in 2021 and will be an important milestone for the new Genesis electric cars.

According to a recent Genesis Boss interview with Manfred Fitzgerald with Car and Driver, he finally confirmed. “We will have a new G80, which will be released in September this year in Korea, and then on world markets. With this car you will see the next evolution of our design language, ”added Fitzgerald.

Now our informant said that the car was delayed until 2020. At the moment, the problem has been confirmed and the cause of the delay was a lot of minor problems with the 2.5-liter Theta III Turbo engine. This engine is tuned for 286 hp. and will be used with the 8-speed DCT transmission. The delay in the development of this engine will affect several models that will also use this engine.

The new G80 will incorporate the next generation Genesis design philosophy, which was introduced on the Essentia concept as well as on the concept car of the GV80 SUV. The new G80 will feature a slim coupé-inspired body design with a fully detached LED headlight system, a pentagonal front grille, a low and long side profile and a sporty rear view design.

Significant improvement will occur in the area of powertrains, while the Hyundai Motor Group will present all this with the introduction of two new engine families. The first will be the 2.5-liter and 4-cylinder Theta III engine, offered with a Twin-Turbo system and an ultimate power of 300 hp. The 3.3-liter gasoline turbojet in the high-performance G80 Sport is expected to change to a new 3.5-liter Lambda III engine with up to 400 horsepower.

There are also suggestions that the 2.2-liter diesel engine will be replaced by the new 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine. In addition to the internal combustion engine, the new G80 is expected to include some electric powertrain. Some consumers are waiting for the launch of a pure electric car from Genesis, but this is unlikely due to the fact that we have not yet seen a single electric car Hyundai Moto. Models equipped with a 48V soft hybrid system are more likely to be added to the lineup than pure electric cars.
