New Citan: still the equivalent of Renault Kangoo, but it will have more from MercedesAugust 27, 2019
Daimler announced the next-generation Citan car. Like the current model, the novelty was developed together with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi.
In May of this year, Dieter Zetsche was replaced by Swede Ola Kallenius as head of Daimler. Even before he took office, rumors spread that the German concern was waiting for large-scale changes. In particular, Daimler allegedly breaks the partnership with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, which began almost ten years ago (then the alliance was still called Renault-Nissan). There will really be fewer joint projects. For example, new smart models will be developed under the wing of Geely, that is, the relatives of Renault Twingo the following compacts will probably not be anymore. And the Mercedes X-Class pickup truck, built on the same platform as the Nissan Navara, can completely sink into oblivion – the demand for a premium truck is weak.
However, there is still no question of a final severance of relations with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi: today, Daimler officially announced that the Mercedes Citan will receive a successor, which, like the current model, will be built together with the Franco-Japanese auto giant. The current Citan debuted in 2012, it is a clone of Renault Kangoo. The release of the German concern does not directly say that the model of the new generation will be created on the basis of the “Frenchman”. But, obviously, the “German” will again be a relative of Renault, in addition to the addition of the standard car Daimler announced its electric version. And in the spring of this year, Renault just showed the harbinger of the next Kangoo, and it was in the form of an electric car.
The Germans have not yet revealed any details about the “stuffing” of the upcoming Citan, and even the date of the premiere has not been announced. However, in Renault, the characteristics of the new Kangoo were also not named – neither ordinary, nor “green”. But it is known that the model of the French brand will enter the market in 2020. Then, most likely, they will introduce Citan.
By the way, Daimler noted that from the first glance at their new product it will be possible to determine its belonging to the Mercedes-Benz brand. Apparently, in terms of design, the next Citan will be much more divorced from its sister Kangoo, while current cars have a lot in common.
Meanwhile, the current Mercedes Citan cannot be called successful: in 2018, 5,953 units were sold in Europe – and this is the best year for the model. For comparison: Renault Kangoo last year acquired 20,375 owners in the European market.
Recall that at the end of his career, the current Kangoo got another brother – in the spring, the Nissan brand showed the NV250, it will reach European dealers in September. And while Citan looks different from the source, the NV250 is an almost exact copy of the donor model, the only difference is the design of the front end.
