New BMW X1 spotted in testsAugust 24, 2020
BMW has begun road tests of the third-generation X1 compact crossover ahead of its expected debut in the first half of 2022.
The compact crossover, which technically replicates the latest generation of the BMW 1-Series hatchback, was spotted wearing camouflage during testing. Given that the current generation of the model went on sale quite recently, you should not expect BMW to present a new product before 2022.
Visually, it appears that the next X1 will have a design that evolved from the newer, bolder styling of the X2 as well as the new 1-Series. What appears to be an enlarged grille fits into this concept, and the overall shape has become more angular. The model appears to be slightly larger, with a more vertical roofline to differentiate the X1 from the X2.
Inside, we will see all the latest technology for entertainment, comfort and safety that will put the Audi Q3 rival on par with newer competitors and the rest of the BMW lineup.
The new X1 will use a heavily redesigned version of the UKL platform that we know from the current model. While details have not yet been released, the Bavarian brand has previously confirmed that an electric version of the next X1, which is expected to be named the iX1 in line with the sub-brand’s naming strategy, will arrive by 2023.
