The Bavarian company is testing a “charged” prototype BMW M5 CS on the legendary track.

With the proliferation of SUVs, BMW M is redirecting some of its resources to research and development for models such as the X5 M and X6 M, as well as the X3 M and X4 M. At the same time, the Bavarians are working on several M Performance models, such as the X2 M35i and X7. M50i.

The X8 M is rumored to be coming soon, and some might be tempted to say BMW has put sedans on the back burner. This is not really the case when you consider that BMW has actually expanded its line of powerful sedans by adding the M235i Gran Coupe as a competitor to the AMG CLA 35 and Audi S3 Sedan.

Not only that, but the most popular M-brand sedan of them all will quite possibly arrive later this year as the M5 CS. A notch above the already extremely powerful M5 Competition, the new look of the four-door sports car was spotted during tests at the Nurburgring.

From the new front spoiler lip to the custom spoiler lip on the CS boot lid, you can easily tell that we are dealing with an M5 CS. The prototype looked like it was glued to the road, thanks to the stiffer suspension, which significantly reduced the ride height.

Some people argue that the sound generated by the engine is not as exciting as it should be, but there is a reason for that. Vehicles meeting European requirements will receive a petrol particulate filter, which is expected to have a negative impact on the noise generated by the 4.4-liter twin-turbo unit.

Speaking of which, the V8 is already putting out an astounding 617 horsepower in the M5 Competition, so it will be interesting to see how much extra power the engineers are going to unlock. We’ve heard that power could go up to almost 650bhp, but nothing official at the moment.

Whatever the power jump is, rumor has it that the CS will also bring some slight weight loss. The diet is exactly what the doctor ordered, given that M5s are getting bigger and heavier with each new generation. It is likely that the M5 CS will be released as a special limited edition series.
