A video of the BMW 2 Series tests at the Nurburgring has appeared on the web. Rear-wheel drive is known to be an important aspect of the future coupe.

The BMW 2 Series is one of the brand’s most beloved models, especially for those who value compact dimensions and rear-wheel drive. BMW fans have been patiently waiting for the all-new car, and while early spy shots showed its basic shape, it is still not known exactly what it will look like. Thanks to them and the leaked images of the interior, the puzzle is gradually coming together, and the video showing the new car at the Nurburgring got everyone back to the discussion.

The good news is that the new car will not share the architecture of the FWD 2 Series Gran Coupe. The dense camouflage makes it difficult to identify key design elements, but it is clear that the new car will have different dimensions, especially at the front, where it will receive a longer and wider hood. The sloping shoulders and angular body also hint at a different, evolutionarily new look. The front end does not resemble the controversial new BMW 4 Series and is more like the BMW X2 SUV, albeit with a more aggressive front bumper and model-specific taillights.

The new 2 Series will not stick to the current downsizing and front-wheel drive design, said BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe project manager Gernot Stoel. The successor will ride on a rear-wheel-drive platform, he said, satisfying customers looking for a new coupe and six-cylinder engine.

BMW 2 Series fans can expect a wide range of engines for the international market, including a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine and a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder, which will be possible for the M235i. That being said, the famous V6 will be reserved for the hardcore M2 Coupe, which is expected to produce around 420 horsepower.
