New 2019 Toyota RAV4: new all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmissionMarch 28, 2018
The company Toyota presented at the motor show in New York crossover RAV4 fifth generation. The car, made in the style of last year’s FT-AC concept, received a completely different body and exterior design, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a new platform.
The basis of RAV4 is the modular architecture of TNGA K – the same as the last Camry. As they say in the company, this design is 57 percent stiffer than the previous crossover. In addition to the fact that RAV4 became the first all-wheel drive car of Toyota on TNGA, it is also the first car of the company with the system of “dynamic torque distribution”. It can transfer up to 50 percent of traction to the rear wheels, and also distribute it between the left and right rear wheels to improve handling.
When the all-wheel drive is not required (for example, with uniform traffic on the highway), special gear couplings on the front and rear axle stop the rotation of the propeller shaft, completely shutting down the traction. The basic versions will be without the torque distribution system, and the hybrid will get its own transmission, where the rear wheels are driven by an electric motor.
The overall length of the novelty is 4595 millimeters, width – 1855 millimeters, height – 1699 millimeters, and the wheelbase size reaches 2689 millimeters. Thus, the car in comparison with the predecessor became ten millimeters shorter and ten millimeters wider, and the distance between the axes of the crossover of the fifth generation increased by 29 millimeters.
In the US, the new RAV4 will be offered with a 2.5-liter petrol with 4 cylinders (the power is not yet called, and the former unit of the same volume produced 180 forces), working in tandem with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a hybrid powerplant. It includes an engine 2.5, an electric motor and a variator.
The crossover will have three modifications: XSE Hybrid, Limited and Adventure. The first of these in the Toyota is called the most sporty of all – this car has special settings for springs and shock absorbers, as well as handling. The second option is the most luxurious of all, and the third is distinguished by a more off-road appearance.
The novelty also received LED lights, an adaptive cruise, front frontal warning systems, traffic signs, automatic high-end shifts, a new multimedia complex with a seven-inch screen (or eight-inch as an option), support for Amazon Alexa, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and also the JBL audio system.
In the US, sales of the RAV4 will begin by the end of this year. Hybrid version will be released on the market in 2019.
