Musk: “Tesla’s autopilot is already taking me to work almost independently”August 8, 2020
According to Electrek, Tesla engineers installed the latest alpha version of the autopilot in Musk’s electric car and gave the head of Tesla the opportunity to try out the new software. Following the test results, Musk confirmed that the company’s fully unmanned technology will be ready by the end of 2020. Further, the question of its implementation will depend on the regulators.
“I personally checked the latest alpha version of the automated software. The technology is indeed vastly better than most people think. In fact, I can already leave the house and drive to work, almost without driving a car, despite the fact that I drive through construction sites and find myself in a variety of situations. That is why I am absolutely confident that the development of a fully functioning self-driving system will be completed by the end of this year, ”Musk said.
If Musk’s words are confirmed, Tesla will be the first company to make a sharp leap from second-tier autonomy technology straight to fifth.
The latter implies full automation, when the car owner can watch a movie or go to bed. In addition, unlike Waymo and numerous Chinese startups, Tesla does not use LiDAR and specialized sensors along the roads, so the company’s autopilot will work on any public roads at any time of the year and in any weather.
At the same time, Elon Musk explains that even after the official release of “Tesla Self-Driving”, electric cars will still require attention from the driver. It will take the company time before government regulators allow cars to be used as a fully autonomous system.
