MINI John Cooper Works has prepared a rear-wheel drive buggy for the Dakar Rally 2018November 21, 2017
The last time MINI won the Dakar Rally in 2015. Two years later, without a victory, the British are eager to win back.
X-raid Team sports team will go on the future of the Dakar-2018 Rally on two prepared prototypes: the usual all-wheel drive MINI John Cooper Works Rally and the new rear-wheel drive MINI John Cooper Works Buggy. This is reported in a press release of the manufacturer.
The MINI division of John Cooper Works created a new hardcore rally car and named it the Buggy, although it has all the traditional body panels. Its feature is the rear-wheel drive, as previously the British company exhibited only four-wheel-drive prototypes for the competition.
MINI John Cooper Works Buggy is equipped with a 3.9-liter in-line six-cylinder turbodiesel Twinpower Turbo from BMW. Its power is 335 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. Buggy uses a tubular steel frame with carbon fiber and Kevlar bodywork. The novelty has already been tested on a different type of cover in Hungary and Morocco. This car has a chance of winning in its class, as the rear-drive layout allowed to reduce the curb weight of the prototype.
Cars with rear-wheel drive can participate in a rally-marathon with a length of about 9000 kilometers off-road in South America, if equipped with large wheels and a higher ground clearance.
