MINI and Great Wall Motor have signed an agreement on the production of electric cars at a plant in China. A joint venture with equal ownership interests will be based in Jiangsu Province. It also plans to build a new production site.

The joint venture will develop, produce and supply electrified MINI to the Chinese market. This cooperation will enhance the competitive advantages of the brand in the largest market of electric vehicles: in the first five months of this year in China, more than 290 thousand connected hydrides and “battery-powered” cars were sold.

In 2015, the possibility of cooperation with the Great Wall was considered by Volkswagen. Together with the Chinese company, the German manufacturer planned to release a budget model for the local market. At the same time, the head of the Chinese office of the brand Yukhem Heizmann said that Volkswagen is interested in developing budget crossovers and minivans for the Chinese market.

BMW already has a joint venture in China – BMW Brilliance Automotive (BBA). It produces about ⅔ cars sold in the Chinese market.
