On tests, prototypes of the Mercedes-Benz CLA coupe / station wagon, which will receive plug-in hybrid engines, were noticed. The presentation of these machines will be held next year.

Mercedes-Benz began 2019 with the debut of the new CLA compact 4-door coupe. Interestingly, the car was not presented at a major car dealership or separate event, but at the CES-2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Almost a year after the premiere, foreign journalists captured a pair of CLA prototypes with a black ribbon on the snowy roads of Sweden, which were in the places where the configuration mark is usually located, as well as round yellow stickers and an additional fuel tank cap on the right rear. This can only mean that we have plug-in hybrid versions of the CLA.

How do we know what the electrified version of the model is? To begin with, the aforementioned yellow stickers are usually available on those versions of the brand’s production models that somehow use the electrification of their motor. A casual observer probably would not have thought twice about seeing the fuel door at the rear of these Mercs, but they would also not have noticed a second door from the other side. In this case, liquid fuel will be poured on the left side, and the charging plug for electricity will be on the right.

If you take a closer look at some photos, you can notice the 250e nameplate, which is covered with a black ribbon – they hid it, but we found it. Thus, we can see the 4-door CLA 250e coupe and the CLA 250e Shooting Brake station wagon before their official presentation.

Despite the additional fuel filler, prototypes seen look the same as standard CLA designs. We expect a minimum of changes in the showroom too. Under the hood, a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that will work with a 75 kilowatt electric motor is likely to be. In total, the plug-in hybrid powerplant will produce 218 horsepower. It is expected that in the electrified CLA the range will be from 59.55 to 69 km in fully electric mode (measurements were carried out in accordance with the international standard WLTP).

As for when the official presentation of the electrified versions of the CLA coupe / station wagon will take place, I want to say that it will appear at CES 2020 in Vegas, which is only a few weeks away.
