Mercedes spoke in detail about the innovative steering wheel for the updated E-ClassMay 23, 2020
The German brand has released a video, in which it talks about the advantages of the new steering wheel, which will be equipped with the interior of the updated E-Class business family.
Previously, Mercedes introduced the updated E-Class sedan and coupe, and next week (May 27) will be shown the new version of the coupe and convertible. In general, you can take a look at the E-Class sedan and station wagon to understand what to expect from the other two representatives of the business family.
Mercedes continues to open the veil of secrecy over the two two-door versions of the new E-Class. A couple of minutes ago, a video was published that details the company’s new capacitive steering wheel.
The new capacitive system, which can determine whether the driver keeps his hands on the steering wheel or not, replaces the old one, which required the driver to actively move the steering wheel. New technology allows the system to find out if the driver maintains control of the car. A capacitive wheel does not require the driver to move the wheel, so that the system knows whether a person controls the car at a given time or not.
The system works with a touch “rug” located under the steering wheel surface material – leather or wood – which has one touch surface on the front of the wheel and one on the back. Steering wheel locking forces sensors to detect changes in capacity. If the driver does not grasp the steering wheel tightly enough, the system will not register a touch, and after a certain period, the car will initiate a sequence of warnings. If the driver does not answer them, the car activates emergency stop assistance.
Mercedes is also showing off a new steering wheel design that will have two double-decker spokes with a glossy black Silver Shadow trim on the rim. Other interior changes compared to the E-Class sedan and station wagon will be minimized.
Not so long ago, our publication wrote that Mercedes showed the interior of the updated E-Class coupe and convertible. The press service of the German automaker has published photos that capture the interior of the new Mercedes E-Class 2021 model year in the back of a coupe and convertible.
