Mercedes SL Roadster featured in official “spy” photosAugust 27, 2020
On tests, a camouflaged prototype of the updated Mercedes SL roadster was spotted. The car was developed by Mercedes-AMG specialists and tested on public roads and the race track.
We first saw test prototypes of the next generation Mercedes-Benz SL-Class with a production body back in January this year. Over the past seven months, the German open-top novelty has participated in “extensive digital development, bench testing and simulation testing.” This is exactly what the press release that accompanies these official images says. The German manufacturer reports that significant progress has been made in the development of the model, and the roadster is finally moving on to intensive road testing.
The overall development of the new SL will be carried out by specialists from the Mercedes-AMG sports division.
The next step in the research and development process will take place at Mercedes’ test and technology center in Immendingen, Germany, as well as on public roads in Europe. The automaker has released pictures of the two-seater.
It is believed that the new SL will “move” from a hard roof, like the current version of the model, to a fabric one. There are also rumors about a possible 2 + 2 layout, but this cannot be confirmed with complete certainty. In terms of design, Mercedes has said the new SL will be inspired by the original 300 SL from the last century.
The roadster, developed by AMG, will be mechanically closely linked to the next generation AMG GT sports coupe. This does not mean that they will be identical in everything, but they will probably have several similar engines.
Mercedes is not ready to reveal the date of the new SL’s debut, but we believe that the updated roadster will be presented in the second half of next year. Sales may begin before the end of 2021 – in this case, the car will be positioned as a novelty for the 2022 model year.
Not so long ago, our publication wrote that Mercedes-Benz has completely revealed the appearance of the new S-Class. Mercedes-Benz on Wednesday, August 26, shared the latest teaser for the updated S-Class sedan, which gives an idea of the appearance of the new items of the German brand. The car will debut on September 2 this year.
