Mercedes introduced the black F1 carJune 30, 2020
The Formula 1 Mercedes team makes a statement by showing off its usually silver F1 car in black at the beginning of the 2020 season. The choice is based on the debate about racism.
Mercedes Formula 1 cars usually have silver livery and are traditionally known as Silver Arrows. This tradition dates back to the 1930s, when Mercedes scraped white paint from automobiles to metal to save weight. This year Mercedes takes a completely different approach, because the 2020 season will mainly be held with a black car. W11, introduced earlier this year, received a new color scheme.
Thus, Mercedes makes a statement against racism. Mercedes pilot and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton is the only black racer in Formula 1, and in recent weeks he has opposed racism several times. The six-time champion also participated in the BLM demonstration in London. “We cannot be silent,” said the head of his team, Toto Wolff, about the black car.
The Formula 1 season begins next Friday, after several months of delay due to coronavirus. The first Grand Prix will be held at the Red Bull Ring in Austria next Sunday. The European destinations of the pre-adjusted F1 calendar for 2020 are currently only temporarily confirmed.
