Mercedes-Benz spoke about the new generation model SLJanuary 14, 2019
The chief designer of the German company promises that the new version of the Mercedes-Benz SL (Sport Leicht) has a great future. The official presentation of the car will take place next year.
In a recent interview with CarAdvice at the CES-2019 consumer electronics show in Las Vegas, chief designer of the German brand Mercedes-Benz, Gorden Wagener, revealed some preliminary details about the new generation Sport Leicht (SL) model. It is reported that the car will become “a real wow car with an incredible design.” Mr. Wagener separately noted that the future of the novelty is “very, very bright.”
He called the original version of the 300 SL coupe with an internal W198 index, which was presented in 1954, “the best version of the SL”. According to him, the new version of the car will retain the main features of “that very machine”.
While the serial car, unfortunately, will not receive the doors that opened upwards, they could be in the concept. The head of Mercedes, responsible for the design, said that the new SL will not be a modern interpretation of Gullwing and will not have a retro design. Nevertheless, he borrows the “DNA and spirit” of the first 300 SL, presented in February 1954 at the International Motor Sports Exhibition in New York, two years after the presentation of the same race car on which it was founded.
At the moment it is not known when the sales of the new SL will start, but the latest data indicates that the long-awaited news show will take place next year. The car will be built on the next generation AMG GT platform. It is rumored that Mercedes is working on electrified 6 and 8-cylinder engines.
