Mercedes-Benz presented the new generation GLE crossover at the Paris Motor Show. Car sales in Europe will begin in the spring of next year. The main rival of the novelty will be the BMW X5.
The new GLE is built on the MHA (Modular High Architecture) platform. The same chassis are used by the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class. The new platform was conceived by engineers from Stuttgart especially for models with high ground clearance. The same chassis will use the GLE Coupe, as well as the successors of the GLC and GLS.
The car has grown in size compared to its predecessor. Now the length of the wheelbase of the crossover is 2995 mm (+80 mm). Thanks to this, the free space for the legs of the rear passengers has increased significantly. GLE will be available with five and seven-seater interior. The drag coefficient is 0.29 (0.32 for the previous GLE). The trunk volume is 825 liters, and with the seatbacks folded down, this figure rises to 2055 liters. For off-road driving, customers will be offered an additional Offroad package.

GLE is equipped with a new multimedia system, the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which replaced the top-end Comand, and has already debuted on the A-Class. Artificial intelligence is able to self-educate and with time will be able to understand even complex commands.
Currently, Mercedes-Benz has disclosed technical details only on the GLE 450 4Matic version. This modification of the crossover got a three-liter gasoline six-cylinder in-line engine, issuing 367 hp and 500 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 48-volt on-board network and a starter-generator, providing an additional 22 forces and 250 Nm. Also in the power plant includes a 9-speed automatic transmission.
The appearance of two diesel engines with a capacity of 286 and 340 hp, as well as a six-cylinder gasoline unit, is also expected. Later, the AMG heavy-duty version will be introduced. However, this is likely to happen only next year.
Mercedes-Benz GLE has received an improved active hydraulics Active Body Control with off-road mode, with the activation of which the clearance of the car will increase by 50 millimeters. For a surcharge, a two-speed transfer case will also be available. The top versions of the crossover are equipped with an adaptive air suspension, which can change its settings based on the data of the front video camera, scanning the road.
