Mercedes-AMG talks about new electric exhaust turbochargerJune 17, 2020
The sports division of the German brand introduced a completely new electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which is designed to replace a conventional turbocharger.
It’s no secret that AMG promised to fully electrify its lineup in the coming years. All subsequent cars of the automaker with an index of “73” will have plug-in hybrid power units with a capacity of about 800 hp, while the hypercar AMG One with its electrified F1 engine will be able to develop power of more than 1000 hp
It seems that the engineers from Affalterbach (the brand’s headquarters are located there) have another ace up their sleeves – an electric turbocharger.
The newly developed electric turbocharger promises to eliminate the phenomenon of turbojama. Developed by AMG in collaboration with the renowned Garrett Motion, the new e-turbo system, which is mechanically very similar to that used in Formula 1 racing car engines, combines the quick response of a small turbocharger with the high peak characteristics of a larger turbocharger.
How will the effect of turboyama be eliminated? A tiny electric motor will be mounted on the turbocharger shaft, in particular between the turbine wheel on the exhaust side and the compressor wheel on the side where fresh air is drawn. An electric motor drives the compressor wheel before it begins to receive an exhaust stream.
Using this method, the delayed response of a conventional turbocharger is virtually eliminated, resulting in faster engine response over the entire rev range. AMG says the e-turbo also helps the ICE deliver more torque at lower engine speeds, so the power plant’s performance is much better than a traditional turbocharged engine. The optimum air flow is guaranteed by the turbocharger as it can reach impressive speeds of up to 170,000 rpm.
Not so long ago, our publication wrote that a teaser of the updated Mercedes-AMG E63 was published on the Internet. The German corporation on Tuesday, June 16, shared a teaser image of the updated Mercedes-AMG E63 S 4Matic +. Presentation of new items will be held June 18 this year.
