Mercedes-AMG C45 new generation spotted during testsMarch 3, 2021
It’s not for nothing that the new C63 has been getting all the attention lately: it sheds half of its cylinders, gaining weight after adding electricity. However, there are some preliminary details about the AMG “Lite” version of the new C-Class. This is the Mercedes-AMG C43 model.
As previously reported, the next Mercedes-AMG C43 could change to the “C53” name, which was originally intended to bring the smaller of the two AMG C-Class in line with the larger E53 / CLS 53 / GLE 53. However, it will presumably be will be called “C45”, and there will be no C53 version, as the gap between the C45 and C63 will be too small to justify the emergence of a third AMG derivative.
Like its C63 sibling, the C45 is expected to use the world’s most powerful production four-cylinder engine. Borrowed from the AMG A45 S, the turbocharged 2.0-liter “M139” develops an impressive 416 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque in the “charged” hatchback.
The four-cylinder has already received an additional 31 hp. power compared to the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 found in the outgoing C43, but its torque is 20 Nm lower. Since all versions of the C-Class receive mild hybrid technology, the torque deficit will be eliminated with the introduction of the Integrated Starter Generation (ISG). What the C45 won’t get is the rear-mounted electric motor of the flagship C63, which means that power will be significantly lower at around 550bhp.
Another major change brought about by the change of generations could be the end of production of the C43 coupe and convertible. Mercedes recently said it would remove some of its two-door models from the lineup, and logic dictates that those models are the most vulnerable. Moreover, the prototypes of the next C-Class in the coupe or convertible body have not yet been spotted by photo spies.
The Mercedes-AMG C45 sedan and station wagon may be unveiled before the end of this year or early next year, with the C63 in the same body style coming later.
