McLaren will not produce SUVsSeptember 13, 2019
Crossovers are a source of income for high-end manufacturers. Companies like Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce barely manage to meet the demand for their ultra-expensive SUVs Urus and Cullinan. Even manufacturers such as Ferrari and Aston Martin are about to launch the first SUVs.
But one company still confronts SUVs: McLaren. The British manufacturer of supercars will not build an SUV. In a recent interview, the brand leader clearly stated this. Darren Goddard, director of McLaren Sports Series, said “SUVs are just not cool.”
“They are all just chasing volume. This is not clean. Thinking about the difference between mass production and an exclusive product is completely different, ”Goddard added. But while McLaren often preaches “exclusivity,” the brand is at the top level of overall sales for the class.
In 2018, McLaren sales grew by 43.9%, amounting to 4,806 cars. This is better than Rolls-Royce, which sold 4,107 cars and only a few thousand behind Lamborghini, which transported 5,750 cars in 2018 (historical maximum). Despite the fact that the SUV is not in the brand’s plans, Goddard says that electric models are indeed in the early stages of development, but there are certain difficulties.
“We are more in the evaluation program than in the development program. We are waiting for the right technology, which will allow us to gain experience. We know that he is not ready yet and not quite in time when he will be ready, ”says Goddard.
