McLaren launches five special editions for Senna GTR LM to celebrate 25th Le Mans victorySeptember 18, 2020
In tribute to the brand’s finest sports cars that raced at the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans, the British company unveiled five McLaren Senna GTR LM special models.
Five special Senna GTR LMs were created in honor of the five McLaren F1 GTRs that dominated the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans. All examples were built by McLaren Special Operations and each has its own unique paint scheme.
Each car has been designed to mimic the look of the F1 GTR that finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 13th at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It took MSO at least 800 hours to paint each of the five LM Senna GTRs. McLaren also had to seek special permission from companies such as Gulf and Harrods, as well as Le Mans organizer, Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), to create various logos and brands. The only piece of vinyl on the exterior is the recreated roof decal for each car.
The first of these is the McLaren Senna GTR LM 825/1, created as a tribute to the McLaren F1 / 01R known as the “Ueno Clinic car” that won Le Mans in 1995. MSO has been able to perfectly reproduce the car’s iconic dark gray paintwork. The race car even got different high-beam headlights of the car.
The second is the Senna GTR LM 825/6, known as the “Harrods car”. The F1 car he pays tribute to was driven by Andy Wallace, Derek Bell and Justin Bell, and he could have won the race, but he had a drivetrain problem and came in 3rd. It was bright yellow with a bright green stripe. The MSO team painted the sports car in sunny yellow and the stripe finished in heritage green.
The third is the McLaren Senna GTR LM 825/2, created as a tribute to the McLaren F1 / 02R, also known as the “Gulf Car”. This F1 finished fourth in the iconic endurance race. It also features OZ Racing wheels, and Ayrton Senna’s signature has been recreated on the rear.
Paying homage to the McLaren F1 / 07R, better known as the “Giacardi Car”, McLaren created the Senna GTR LM 825/7. It has a royal blue paint and also includes the logos of the French oil company Elf, which sponsored the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995.
Last but not least, the Senna GTR LM 825/5, a tribute to F1 / 05R, finished 13th in the race. This car took the longest to paint as it uses extensive airbrushing including lap times and various elements of the Le Mans brand.
Five special vehicles will be delivered to customers in the US, Europe and the UK.
“The incredible cars from the McLaren Senna GTR LM collection are a great way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our victory at Le Mans in 1995,” McLaren CEO Mike Flewitt said in a statement. “This achievement is widely recognized as one of the greatest endurance racing achievements of all time, but for McLaren it was even more important as it demonstrated a direct and undeniable connection between our brand’s racing DNA and the beginning of our automotive journey.”
