Mazda will abandon new models for the next 2 yearsFebruary 24, 2020
Over the next two years, the Japanese corporation will not release new models or update existing ones to develop a new platform.
According to the Nikkei Asian Review agency, Mazda is going to take a break for several years and postpone not only the release of new products, but also the modernization of the current ones. This is necessary for the automaker to prepare for a very large-scale update of the model line, which provides for a new brand development strategy in the near future.
According to plans that became known after the publication of the report for Mazda investors, the brand intends to create a new rear-wheel drive platform and a pair of 6-cylinder engines, both gasoline and diesel, and a hybrid system by 2023.
According to the assumptions, the appearance of the Japanese brand of larger and more modern cars based on the new architecture with the Six will give the opportunity to move into the luxury brand category and compete with at least Lexus and Infiniti, and later even the German Big Three. But the implementation of such an ambitious strategy will require large resources, for this reason the Japanese company decided to focus on the future instead of wasting time and money on the existing model line.
