Max Verstappen won the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix,April 18, 2021
The race has become one of the brightest in recent years thanks to the start on rain tires. The pilots presented the fans with intrigue and a lot of bright struggle.
On Sunday, April 18, the second stage of the season in the Formula 1 class took place. The race took place on the legendary Imola track in Italy. It rained before the start of the race – almost all the pilots chose intermediate tires, with the exception of Gasly, Okon, Schumacher, who started on the rain.
The start was excellent by Verstappen, who was able to break through from third position immediately to first place, ahead of Hamilton in a tough struggle. Charles Leclair passed Sergio Perez and came out on the third line – the Monegasque even put pressure on Lewis for some time. From other events of the start, we note the problems of Vettel, who had to start from the pit lane, as well as the breakthrough of Tsunoda. During the pace car Mick Schumacher made a mistake – after contact with the wall, he had to go to the mechanics for a new front fender.
In the first part of the race, Verstappen broke away from Hamilton by 6 seconds, but he worn out the tires faster and drove to the pit stop earlier. If the mechanics of “Mercedes” had not hesitated at the pit stop of Hamilton, the Briton would have become the leader of the race. We note Norris’ breakthrough to 5th place after an unsuccessful start, as well as the continuation of the problems of Valtteri Bottas, who, against the background of his partner fighting for the victory, was only tenth. The track began to dry up and almost everyone switched to slicks. Lewis Hamilton made a mistake on the wet track – the Briton lost control, flew out and damaged the front fender. However, he was able to return to the track and reach the mechanics.
And on lap 34, there was a very serious accident involving Valtteri Bottas and George Russell. Russell really claimed points and was very dissatisfied with the behavior of the Finn on the track.
The collision resulted in a red flag and a race halt. Now the question of whether Bottas will be asked from Mercedes before the end of the season becomes more pressing. During the restart, Max Verstappen retained the lead, while Lewis Hamilton began his breakthrough to the top. Sergio Perez made a mistake, after which he no longer claimed points. The second position was taken by Lando Norris from McLaren, followed by two Ferraris – Charles Leclair and Carlos Sainz. Lewis Hamilton drove up close to them. The eight-time world champion confidently beat two Ferraris and McLaren to finish the race in second place.
Norris finished third and Leclair fourth. Sainz came fifth to the finish line – this is a real success for the Ferrari team. Sixth place was left for Daniel Riccardo from McLaren, who this weekend clearly lost to his teammate. Lance Stroll finished seventh in the Aston Martin. The eighth position was taken by Pierre Gasly at the Alpha Tauri, although he could have scored more points if the tactics were more successful. An excellent race was led by veteran Kimi Raikkonen, who brought his Alfa Romeo to ninth place. And closed the TOP-10 pilots who are gaining points, Esteban Ocon at the Alpin.
Note that the world champions Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel were unable to rehabilitate for the unsuccessful qualification and finished the race at 11 and 15. Lewis Hamilton received another point for the best lap and led the overall standings with 44 points. Verstappen is second with 43 points.
