Look at the 30-year evolution of the Hyundai ElantraOctober 8, 2020
The model changed seven generations
Insurance company Budget Direct showed how the design of one of the most popular sedans of the brand has changed in 30 years. The first Elantra rolled off the assembly line in 1990. The brand is currently producing the seventh generation of the car.
The first generation Hyundai Elantra rolled off the assembly line in 1990. The model that replaced the Stellar sedan was produced for five years. Then, under the hood of the car, engineers placed a 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with 113 horsepower. The unit allowed to accelerate to “hundreds” in 9.5 seconds. Direct competitors of the new Korean model were Ford Sierra and Opel Vectra.
The next generation of Elantra debuted in 1995. The design of the Korean sedan has become smoother. The model also acquired its own line of Hyundai Beta power plants, which included engines of 1.6 to 2.0 liters. In addition, a station wagon is available for the first time for a stud car.
The third generation of the model appeared in 2000. In addition to the sedan and station wagon, the model received a hatchback body, and the engine line was replenished with a two-liter diesel engine.
At the 2006 New York Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled the fourth generation of the Elantra, called the HD, which engineers applied even smoother lines to the design. Starting with this version, “Elantra” was produced exclusively in the sedan body, while the hatchback was named i30.
The fifth generation of the model was released in 2010. The car with the prefix “MD” for South Korea and “UD” for the United States has become noticeably larger than previous versions of the sedan. In addition, a three-door modification was developed for the car, which was called the Elantra Coupe.
The penultimate version of the Hyundai Elantra appeared in 2016. The model acquired a massive radiator grille, which later became a distinctive feature of most cars of the brand.
The current generation of the model debuted in March 2020. The car received a sportier design, an unchanged large radiator grille, as well as many modern technologies. For the first time in history, Elantra has become a hybrid. And also received a sports performance N Line.
