LG May Buy Spanish Nissan PlantSeptember 23, 2020
The South Korean company LG Chem should decide on a decision on the purchase of the Spanish enterprise during September. This term is called by the local media. If the deal goes through, the plant will produce batteries for electric cars.
It became known at the end of May 2020 that Nissan was selling its car plant in Barcelona, Spain.
The closure of the facility is part of the Japanese automaker’s new three-year business strategy. The Nissan enterprise is estimated at 1.6 billion euros. The potential buyer was LG, which could convert the plant to produce batteries. These batteries would later be put on electric cars for Europe.
For a South Korean company, the plant in Spain would become the second European one. Recall that LG manufactures its products in Poland.
The closure of the Spanish Nissan plant would have left about 2.5 thousand specialists without work. Local authorities decided to intervene and promised state aid in the amount of 600 million euros for the purchase of the car plant.
With the new owner, the factory workers have a chance to keep their jobs, however, they still cannot do without layoffs. LG would have needed 1,500 – 2,000 specialists to work.
Earlier, AutoTimesNews said that LG will have a car voice assistant. The company has developed voice control technology for cars based on the LG webOS Auto platform. Cerence Inc. also contributed to the creation of the new software.
