Lexus IS F with V8 engine to rival BMW M3September 6, 2020
The BMW M3 will probably still be faster, but this V8-powered Lexus IS F is likely to win the soundtrack competition.
The refreshed Lexus IS arrived a little earlier this year with new lines, suspension tweaks that Lexus says improved handling, and four-cylinder or V6 engine options. However, the “charged” IS F was not in the assortment for a long time. The last such variant was a legitimate competitor to the BMW M3 sedan, but now there seems to be some hope for its return.
According to the Japanese auto magazine, the new Lexus IS F is expected to arrive in November this year. Power is said to come from a 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine. This V8 is already used in the RC F Coupe, where it produces 472 horsepower and 535 Nm of torque, but the Japanese quote 474 horsepower. That’s about 58 hp. more than the latest IS F, although that’s less than the 510bhp expected from the upcoming, all-new M3 in Competition specification.
The turbocharged M3 should have higher torque than the Lexus. On the other hand, the Lexus V8 sounds so good. Interestingly, Lexus recently trademarked the IS 500 in North America, indicating that the V8-powered IS is on the way and will receive an F prefix. Whether there will be room in the IS line for another V8 below the IS F remains to be seen. but such a derivative could be the perfect backdrop for the BMW M340i and Mercedes-AMG C43.
Currently the most productive IS is the IS 350 with a V6 engine producing 311 hp. and a torque of 380 Nm. It’s fast enough for most, but just can’t compete with the top German brands. Whatever happens, one thing is clear – in the near future, the current IS line may receive one, if not two high-performance offerings.
