Lexus has proven the danger of using a phone while drivingApril 7, 2021
Drivers’ loss of visibility by 4.6 seconds changed their mind about distracted driving practice.
Every time you check a text message while driving, your eyes are lifted off the road for 4.6 seconds. To show what could go wrong during that time, Lexus this month invited real people to get behind the wheel of the NX 4.6, a crossover with an electrochromic windshield that can instantly take drivers out of sight. April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, established by the National Security Council (NSC) over 10 years ago.
Distracted driving claimed the lives of more than 3,000 people in 2019, according to NHTSA, and the organization cites text messaging as the most dangerous. If you ask the average person how long it takes to send or receive a text, they will probably say “1 or 2 seconds.” But in fact, in 4.6 seconds at a speed of 90 km / h, you will run over the entire football field “with your eyes closed”, and almost two football fields at 135 km / h.
In the video, drivers are driving a specially equipped Lexus NX with electrochromic windows that instantly turn clear glass into opaque, “completely blocking the driver’s view for 4.6 seconds.” This is the same technology used in the Toyota Venza. As expected, real chaos ensues on the strip with a mass of obstacles, while the drivers did not know about the unusual glass.
The screeching and cursing video perfectly demonstrates how drivers lose their minds when the windows become opaque. They all either crash into cones, or into a fake motorcyclist, or a fake deer, or a fake wall. And they all had something to think about after the experiment.
“Lexus wants to raise awareness of safety while driving by changing the way we text and drive. Even the most advanced road safety systems today cannot replace the driver’s undivided attention, ”said Vinay Shahani, vice president of marketing for Lexus.
Most of us are distracted by messages, and most of us, like the project participants, think that we only take our eyes off the road for a second. But even experienced drivers are known to deviate slightly when checking or texting. This is why hands-free systems are so important. It was great when we first started connecting our phones using Bluetooth, but now we have even more options with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you have a car that is close to a modern one, there is no reason to look down at your phone.
