Lexus continues to work on the first electric carApril 26, 2019
The company officially confirmed that the project is actively developing, but the exact date of entry into the market has not yet been named. The company sees China and Europe as the main markets.
The information about the electric car was voiced by Lexus President Yoshihiro Sava. According to him, Lexus will definitely require an electric car. He did not deny or confirm that the first Lexus electric car will be the UX crossover. A few months ago, the company registered the right to use the UX300e index in European countries.
In favor of this option, they say, and indirect data, namely the actions of Toyota Motor. The technically close Toyota C-HR crossover has received the electric version for the Chinese market – there will be two Toyota partners at once producing it – GAC and FAW. Although the company does not yet plan to withdraw electrified C-HR outside China, nothing can prevent the use of technical solutions implemented in this model for Lexus. Moreover, one of the priority markets for electric Lexus is also called Chinese.
Lexus sees considerable promise in electrifying its models, but it will not act recklessly, ahead of events. In particular, hybrids currently account for about a quarter of Lexus sales, which the company considers to be a very high figure. At the same time, the demand for electrified cars in the premium segment is uneven and strongly depends on the specific market.
It is difficult to say whether Lexus plans for large-scale electrification of its line, but the more likely option is to have a relatively massive electrical model that could help shape the company’s image without affecting the overall global sales of Lexus.
