Lewis Hamilton: I’m out of luckSeptember 8, 2019
Mercedes hoped to compete for the pole in Monza, but because of the strange situation in the final qualification, both riders did not have time for the second fastest lap. As a result, they start from the second and third places and are glad that they were able to get ahead of one of the Ferrari.
Lewis Hamilton (2nd): “We did not win the pole, but Ferrari is anyway fast on this track, and Charles did a great job. I was not lucky – Kimi turned in front of me, so on the first attempt I had to slow down in the last corner.
The end of the qualification disappointed: we could not all go to the track and drive the final round, but usually this is one of the most interesting components of the racing weekend. The machine is capable of more, so it’s a shame that in the final round we could not show the maximum, and find out who is faster today. It’s great to break into the front row and split the two Ferrari. Together we can get ahead of Charles, but we’ll see. ”
Valtteri Bottas (3rd): “In the first attempt, I was unlucky because of the yellow flags in the last corner. Kimi flew off the track, so I had to slow down. But even on that circle, I was pretty close to Charles and Lewis, so things could go even better.
The final attempt turned into chaos for everyone. At the end of the session, we simply did not have enough time. I was stuck in traffic, and then it was too late to start the second fastest lap. It’s a shame, we all would like to drive this circle, and I’m sure everyone would like to see it. I hope we will draw conclusions.
But overall, we have a good pace, and I am pleased with my performance. I am glad that I will start from the second row. We all know that only the race is important, and there are always excellent chances after starting in the top three. Yesterday we had a good racing pace, so I hope to impose a Ferrari fight tomorrow. ”
Toto Wolff, team leader: “Strange completion of the qualification: everyone tried to use a slip stream, but because of a long wait at the end of the session they did not manage to start a circle – and looked silly. Nevertheless, starting from the second and third positions in Monza, ahead of one of the Ferrari is a good result, so we look forward to the race. He could arrange us when we arrived on the track, but we are all racers and, of course, expect more on Sunday. We have good positions, a good car, although not the fastest on the line. We need to prepare for the race, and I know that we all look forward to the start and hope to earn a lot of points. “
Andrew Shovlin, chief racing engineer: “We hoped to compete for the pole, it’s always a shame when you concede quite a bit. Recently, we often saw that our racing pace is better, and it seems to me that we have chosen the right settings so that the car works well on long series of laps.
In the morning everything went smoothly, we reduced the program a bit, because the session started later, but both riders did a good job and found the right balance before qualifying. Until the last attempt, everything went well, but then no one wanted to go first, so everyone left the boxes very late, and as a result, almost no one managed to drive the second fastest lap.
We want to get Ferrari to work tomorrow, and I hope we will stop them from taking a position when they can control the race. While we will put pressure on them, we will be able to use the strategy, and the first segment will tell us if we have enough pace to do this. ”
